Robert Salata, MD, Named Chairman of the Department of Medicine
Dr. Salata emerged as the clear choice for this senior leadership position as we evaluated high-caliber candidates from all across the country. Dr. Salata is a well-respected academic physician and leader. He has a strong track record of achievement and a clear and ambitious vision for the future of our academic medical center. Dr. Salata will drive the development of new programs and build the capacity and reputation of the institution in all areas of the mission.
Dr. Salata also becomes Physician-in-Chief for the UH system and will have a high-profile role in integrating the system to meet patients’ medical needs and to become more entrepreneurial and efficient clinically.
Dr. Salata has served as Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine and Interim Physician-in-Chief for the past year; as Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine for seven years; and as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine for nearly two decades. Dr. Salata also is Medical Director of Infection Control and Prevention. He serves on the UH Board of Directors and is Professor of Medicine, International Health and Epidemiology/Biostatistics at his alma mater, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Salata’s reputation and impact as an infectious-diseases expert are global. He was a pioneer in developing treatments for HIV/AIDS here and in Uganda, and remains a major leader in the field.
