Major Clinical Programs ::

The Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) and the Cleveland Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC) has a long history of clinical excellence. The revision is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art patient care, being thought leaders in clinical care, and developing the next generation of leader’s through our educational programs.

Our clinical activities center around our core services of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Within these core areas, subspecialty centers of clinical excellence include lung cancer, interstitial fibrosis, lung transplantation, pulmonary vascular disease, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, interventional bronchoscopy, sleep, emphysema, pulmonary rehabilitation, and critical care. Our Medical Intensive Care Unit has over 1600 admissions a year and continues to grow. It is a national leader in critical care, recognized with an AACN Beacon Award four years in a row, the only ICU in the nation to achieve such recognition. Hundreds of bronchoscopic procedures are performed annually using the latest technology including electromagnetic navigation and bronchoscopic ultrasound. Thousands of sleep studies are performed and read by an internationally known faculty pioneering new approaches to sleep medicine. Our cystic fibrosis center has one of the largest adult populations in the country that we care for in collaboration with the Pediatric Pulmonary Division. Our lung cancer program is a leader in diagnostics and therapeutics through its multi-disciplinary program in the Ireland Cancer Center that brings together pulmonologists, medical oncologists, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, chest radiologists, nuclear radiologists, and pathologists.

Clinical program development/accomplishments:

  • Rankings in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” survey placed the Division at 42 in Respiratory Disorders for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

  • Expansion of VA Sleep Disorders Center by addition of Drs. Ibrahim (Assistant Professor of Medicine) Koo, (Assistant Professor of Neurology), Dennis Kelley RN, CNP., additional sleep technologist and Respiratory Therapy CPAP Coordinator
    • Expansion of VA pulmonary program with additional APN in Pulmonary Medicine
    • Expansion of Adult CF program with addition of Dr Dasenbrook
    • Expansion of UHCMC Sleep Program with the addition of Mary Boron RN, CNP.

  • Develop a system wide critical care initiative addressing system resource utilization and allocation, quality improvement and medical leadership.

  • Explore the development of a Lung Center.
