Sleep Fellowship Clinical Training

The clinical training of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship program takes place at three sites:

  • University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
  • The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center
  • MetroHealth Medical Center

Fellows train predominantly in outpatient clinic, and participate in the Sleep Center activities (reading diagnostic tests, in-patient consultations and quality assurance) at each of the training sites. Pediatrics sleep medicine is also part of the program, with a weekly outpatient clinic at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. In addition, there are elective experiences available with otolaryngology, dentistry, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, and epilepsy/neurology.

While learning and competency assessments accrue in all areas of the discipline, the Sleep Medicine Fellowship program places emphasis on:

  • First Quarter: Neurophysiology/neuropharmacology, patient assessment, differential diagnosis, international classification, research
  • Second Quarter: Techniques of monitoring (PSG, MWT, MSLT), neurology for non-neurologists, pulmonology for non-pulmonologists
  • Third Quarter: Sleep disorders of medical and psychiatric illness, psychology and psychological testing, psychiatry for non-psychiatrists
  • Fourth Quarter: Sleep medicine systems (administrative and societal issues), presentation of yearly scholarly work
