Brief Biography ::

A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, Stossel trained in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and in hematology at Boston Children's Hospital. Formerly head of Hematology Oncology at MGH and Co-Director of Hematology at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH), he is currently Director of Translational Medicine at BWH and American Cancer Society Professor at Harvard. He was President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and American Society of Hematology and edited the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

For his research on cell motility he was elected to The National Academy of Sciences, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Institute of Medicine, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, received honorary degrees from the Universities of Linköping and Geneva and the Dameshek and Thomas Awards of the American Society of Hematology. He is commercializing aspects of his research that may reduce critical care complications and improve blood platelet transfusion. He is a co-founder of The Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators (ACRE) that educates concerning the value of physician-industry relationships.

For his policy work concerning this topic he received the Sherwood award of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and the McGovern Award of the American Medical Writers Association. He is Editor in Chief of Current Opinion in Hematology, on the Board of Directors of Velico Corporation and Founding Scientist of Aegis Biotherapeutics. With his wife, Kerry Maguire, DDS, MSPH and others, Stossel has founded a nonprofit organization, Options for Children in Zambia and provides voluntary dental and medical care in that country.
