Hematology Oncology Patient Care

Our overall goal for the division clinical program is to provide quality care and innovation that is nationally recognized for excellence. This is accomplished by development and implementation of a Seidman Cancer Center model of care at the main campus and throughout northeast Ohio, delivering high quality hematology and oncology care to the region with broad patient access to clinical trials. We recognize that most hematology and oncology care is practiced in community settings. At the same time, we will continue to develop academic faculty with national recognition for disease-focused expertise and clinical research excellence. In this manner we will have an expanded capacity to develop new therapies and disseminate them widely.

U.S. News &World Report ranked Cancer in the top 28 hospitals in the nation.

Members of the Division of Hematology and Oncology provide clinical care to patients with benign and malignant hematologic conditions, and solid tumors. The Division provides inpatient and outpatient consultation, as well as longitudinal management. Clinical sites include University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (Main Campus Seidman Cancer Hospital), the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center, and 11 regional sites throughout northeast Ohio. In 2016, approximately 6700 new cancer patients were evaluated across the University Hospitals locations, with approximately 2500 new patients evaluated by main campus hematology and oncology full time academic faculty. Current clinical facilities on the CMC main campus include the free-standing 120-bed UH Seidman Cancer Center and Breen Breast Health Pavilion, both opened in 2010. A dedicated bone marrow transplant unit in UH Seidman Cancer Center conducts autologous, allogeneic, and cord blood stem cell transplants. In addition, UH Seidman Cancer Center contains the Coleman Clinical Research Suite for conduct of early-phase clinical trials. Clinical research protocols are available at all clinical care sites.

Clinical care is coordinated with UH Seidman Cancer Center, and is provided by Multidisciplinary Disease Teams. The Disease Teams meet regularly to develop clinical care pathways, clinical research programs, educational programs, and quality initiatives. In addition, weekly Tumor Boards provide a formal multidisciplinary forum for case presentation, discussion, and clinical decision making. The Disease Teams are supported by dedicated patient care and database coordinators. Disease Teams and the Hematology & Oncology Division leads are shown below.
