Our world-renowned health care network is anchored by our flagship facility, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Located in Cleveland’s historic University Circle, this 1000+ bed academic medical center and tertiary-care hospital is highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report. It comprises three centers of excellence: University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital, and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital; and the Center for Clinical Research, the largest medical research center in Ohio. UH Cleveland Medical Center is one of only 19 centers in the country certified as a Stroke Center by the Joint Comission.  In 2012, University Hospital’s innovation and commitment to quality was recognized as it received the American Hospital Association – McKesson Quest for Quality Award, the first large, urban academic center in the country to ever receive this honor. UH Cleveland Medical Center is a teaching affiliate for Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, allowing for additional experiences in research and teaching.

University Hospital has several iconic structures as part of its physical plant. When Lerner Tower opened in 1992, it was the first academic medical center in the county to have 100 percent single patient rooms. Not only has the design and visual experience withstood the test of time for nearly 20 years, the arts and craft style architecture has garnered a number of design awards. The Seidman Cancer Center opened in 2011, and is an architectural marvel, particularly the visual experience from inside the building. The walls are almost 100 percent glass, and every patient room has a full length glass wall. The public spaces are visually exiting, with soaring open spaces. Seidman also includes an outstanding dining experience, with a Wolfgang Puck restaurant as part of the facility. The facilities at our two major teaching hospitals are outstanding. While the facilities may not be as important as a program’s key components such as the teaching environment; the right combination of autonomy and supervision; the academic environment; and the support for trainees, they can be very impactful on the training experience.

For Med-Peds residents, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is also an iconic, cutting-edge childrens hospital, with innovative architecture and a family centered structure. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is a 244-bed, full-service children’s hospital and academic medical center. A trusted leader in pediatric health care for more than 125 years, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital consistently ranks among the top children’s hospitals in the nation. As the region’s premier resource for pediatric referrals, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s dedicated team of more than 1,300 pediatric specialists uses the most advanced treatments and latest innovations to deliver the complete range of pediatric specialty services for 700,000 patient encounters, annually.

The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veteran Affairs Medical Center is truly one of the nicest VA hospitals in the country, as its clinics, wards and ICUs have all been rebuilt or renovated in the past decade. The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center provides care to over 71,000 veterans each year in northern Ohio, through two inpatient facilities, twelve community based outpatient clinics and three veteran centers. The medical center has been recognized for more programs of clinical excellence than any other VA: Open Heart Surgery, Care of the Seriously Mentally Ill, Geriatric Evaluation and Management, Substance Abuse Care, Spinal Cord Injury Care, Medical Care of the Homeless, and Domiciliary Care of the Homeless.
