Quality Improvement


Resident education on quality consists of a longitudinal curriculum that spans all three years of training in the Internal Medicine Residency program. Details of the curriculum are below:


PGY1: IHI Modules, Error

Residents will learn basic quality improvement terminology by completing IHI Modules during their ambulatory rotations. They also will have interactive didactics during the Primary Care block and Professional Development block on patient safety events, error, and its effect on providers.

Primary Care Block (Blocks 3A-4A)
  • Intro to Error

Ambulatory Rotations

  • Complete assigned IHI Modules

Professional Development Block (Blocks 9A, 10A, 11A)

  • Reflection on Error


PGY2: Quality Improvement Projects

Residents will receive an overview of the project requirements and timeline at the PGY2-to-be retreat. They will receive education on process improvement tools and will go through hands-on practice during the ambulatory rotation didactics. A basic timeline is below:

- Block 1A-2B (July to mid August)

  1. Voice of customer
  2. In scope/out of scope
  3. Problem statement
  4. SMART goals
  5. RACI chart

- Block 4B-6A (mid October to beginning December)

  1. Process mapping
  2. Fishbone diagram
  3. Creating a meaningful survey
  4. IRB requirements

- Block 6B-8A (December and January)

  1. No scheduled quality curriculum
  2. Meet with project mentor and work on the project
  3. Submit a Power Point outlining completed work by the end of the block

- Block 8B-10A (February and March)

  1. Collect post-implementation data
  2. How to write up your QI project

- Beginning to mid May

  1. Present projects as a poster at Research Day



EQUIPS stands for Externship in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. Residents will participate in this part of the curriculum during their DACR rotation. The calendar of didactics and conferences to attend will be provided at the beginning of the rotation and will be comprised of the following components:
